Yesterday, I called American Express to tell them I lost my Amex card. After wading through several automated levels, I finally reached customer service . . . in the — wait for it — Philippines. Although the rep, “Jack”, was quite intelligible and pleasant, I was less than pleased with the information that it would take 5-7 business days for a replacement card to arrive. That annoyed me because American Express has a big corporate office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, about 1.5 hours from here. I figured, with Thanksgiving around the corner, that I wouldn’t see the card until December 1, 2010. Okay . . . I then reprogrammed my Amazon and iTunes accounts with alternate credit cards so that, G-d forbid, I shouldn’t be prevented from shopping online for even one moment. 😉
This afternoon UPS delivered an express letter to me. It was from the card issuer in Nebraska — just as Tagalog Jack said it would be — and it contained a brand new American Express card! Chaaaaaaaarge it!! I flipped the card over and saw that my Costco picture was not on the back. ::sigh:: That meant another call to American Express, but this time I actually reached customer service within U.S. borders. Woohoo! The rep explained that this card was a temporary card for my use until the picture card comes through in 5-7 business days.
Conclusion: American Express does, in fact, live up to its name at least part of the time.
